Why it matters
What makes this recovery hard
Four things run at once, and they interact:
- Surgical drains for roughly three to seven days, which have to be measured and emptied on a schedule
- A compression binder for four to six weeks, which has to be positioned correctly to do its job
- A bent posture for the first five to ten days, because the abdominal skin has been tightened
- No heavy lifting for around six weeks
None of that is complicated on its own. What makes it hard is doing all of it correctly, on schedule, while sore and medicated, in a hotel room, without a second person. The failure mode is not dramatic — it is a drain that stops being measured properly, a binder worn too loosely, a walking schedule that quietly slips, and a complication that gets noticed later than it should have.

Day by day
Day 1 — discharge
Vital signs, positioning, first dressing check, and getting your medication schedule established. Most patients are surprised by how much help they need simply to stand up and sit down. If you are travelling alone, this is the day that most often goes badly without a nurse present.
Days 2–7 — drains and rhythm
Drain output is measured and recorded at every visit, dressings are changed, and the binder is adjusted as swelling moves. Walking starts short and frequent rather than long and occasional. Drains normally come out once output drops below the level your surgeon has set — which is why the measurement log matters, and why guessing at it is not good enough.
Days 8–14 — upright, gradually
Posture straightens on your surgeon’s timeline. Dressings simplify. Most patients step down to every-other-day visits, then to on-call. The binder stays on.
Weeks 3–6 — after you fly home
Binder compliance and lifting restrictions continue long after you have left Colombia. Before you fly we make sure you know what you are still responsible for, and your surgeon has a complete written record of the recovery so far.
Safety
Seromas, and why someone should be looking
Fluid collecting under the skin after an abdominoplasty — a seroma — is one of the more common issues in this recovery, and it can develop after the drains have already been removed. It tends to present as a new area of swelling that feels different from the general post-operative swelling, sometimes with a fluid-shifting sensation when you move. It is usually straightforward to manage when it is found early and more of a problem when it is not.
A new or asymmetric area of swelling, increasing rather than settling pain, redness spreading from the incision, fever, or fluid leaking from the wound are all reasons to contact your surgeon promptly. Somebody assessing your abdomen daily is far more likely to notice a change than you are, looking at it in a hotel mirror.

How long do the drains stay in?
Usually three to seven days, but your surgeon decides based on measured output — which is one of the things your nurse records at every visit.
How soon can I fly home?
Your surgeon clears you, and it depends on how the recovery goes. Plan for at least two weeks in Bogotá and treat an earlier flight as the exception, not the plan.
Can a nurse help me shower?
Yes. Live-in care includes bathing assistance, and day visits include help around wound protection and dressing changes.
Do I need overnight care, or are day visits enough?
If you are travelling alone, we recommend overnight presence for at least the first few nights. With a travel partner in the room, day visits are often sufficient.
